They married at California’s San Quentin State Prison in 1996. At the age of two, Richard had a dresser fall on top of him, knocking him unconscious.
He lived nomadically between San Francisco and Los Angeles County during this time prior to his incarceration. He frequently traveled between the northern and southern areas of California both before and during his yearlong crime spree. Ricardo “Richard” Leyva Muñoz Ramirez was born in El Paso, Texas, on 28 February 1960, at 2.07 a.m., to Julián and Mercedes Ramirez, the youngest of their five children. Richard began smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol at the age of 10. Following Alcala’s arrest in July 1979, police found hundreds of his photographs in a Seattle storage locker. After waiting for a month, he struck again on June 28, 1984, making his way into the house using a window. 79-year-old Janie Vincow was found brutally murdered in her apartment, Janie was brutally raped and stabbed while in her sleep. Miguel was nothing less than a crazy creepy guy who would brag about the gruesome experiences of the Vietnam war.

According to interviews and court testimonies, Ramirez developed epilepsy as a boy and would spend nights in cemeteries. When he was 13, Ramirez witnessed his cousin shoot and kill his wife.
